Tunepal App Reviews

Wonderful !

This tool is wonderful and I give a big applause to Bryan Duggan. It works very good and very easy to use. BRAVO !

Fab!

Very useful tool, if you have a relatively decent internet connection and not too much background noise it works a treat. Have tried it out both with the flute and in sessions and got a hit in most cases. Really like it!

Update!!!

No running on iPhone 6s :-(

Uncanny how good this is

If you ever play at Irish sessions, you owe it to yourself to buy this app. It links into a number of online music databases and you can bring up a tune by title as long as you have an Internet connection. Thats not where the magic is, however. If you are at a session and hear something new, you can have it sample 10 seconds of it at any point during the melody and Tunepal will tell you what it is, bringing up sheet music if you so desire. (It will even keep track of which pub you heard what in by recording GPS fixes.) So how accurate is the tune identification? It is dead on almost every time, regardless of the instruments, the noise level in the pub, etc. When its guessing the tune, it puts up a list of candidates ordered from most to least likely, along with a percentage certainty. Tunepal is actually rather modest most of the time. It may say its only 60% sure the top choice is right, but in my experience, its nearly always right anyway. If you are the first to show up at a session with Tunepal in hand, it will generate a lot of conversation and people will invariably try to stump it, only to be amazed at just how hard it is to fool.

Unbelievable!

This app is now my favorite out of hundreds I currently own! As a whistle and button box player, it is now essential equipment! I cannot believe how polished and bloody perfect it is! It has already paid for itself...within the first ten minutes! I would buy an iPhone just for this app, and nothing else! Seriously...I cant stop talking about it...

A real game changer

I didnt really expect this to work very well but simply hoped that every once in a while it would be able to pick a tune name out of the air for me. Boy was I surprised! Even in a noisy bar, recording a scratchy fiddle playing a weird variation, it still worked! This is an exceptional app and well worth the $5.

Crashes on iPhone 5

Please update for iPhone 5/iOS 6.

Brilliant!!!

This is the be-all and end-all app which should be downloaded by EVERY single person who has ever played or simply appreciated Irish trad music. I cannot express how incredible this app is! If you use the preferences menu correctly for the tune you are seeking, it is virtually flawless! It has picked up and identified countless tunes for me no matter how ornamented or varied it was played! Now that you can sort the My Tunes section, this app is priceless! 5 Stars without question!

Save your money

Very disappointed. It finds a lot of tunes as described BUT menu bars take up 2/3 of the screen. Score appears very small. Rotating ipad makes score slightly larger, but the menu bars get bigger as well. Definitely not worth the 5 dollar App Store prices. If you buy, youll need magnifier glasses to see the score.

Tunepal

I am very impressed with this application. I experimented with a bunch of tunes and tunepal correctly identified them most of the time. I would like if it presented the top 5 ( configurable ) matches for cases where the first choice is not correct.

Great app for session players!

I decided to give the app a try, and Im glad I did! It recognized most of the tunes I know quite well - for a few it didnt show the tune as the first choice, but it was always in the list of possible tunes. This will be a great tool to identify tunes that someone plays but doesnt know the name.

Absolutely amazing

I am absolutely blown away by this app. Bought it, uploaded it to my iPad and starting picking out random (and not all common) tunes on my pennywhistle. TunePal identified every single one of them immediately. This is going to be extremely useful out in the world. Works both on the iPhone and iPad.

Amazing!

If youre a trad-head and just couldnt justify the expense of getting an iPhone, now you have your killer app. No more asking your session mates what the tune was. No more uncomfortable moments when he/she cant quite remember the name either. Just hit record and youve got the name, the notes, even where you heard it. Freakin magic.

I Really Wanted to Like this App....

I tested this app against an hours worth of traditional tunes recordings, with no background noise, from Bohola to Old Blind Dogs, Flook to Lunasa, The Chieftains to Cherish the Ladies, the Boys of the Lough to Capercaillie, Altan to Ossian, from Danu to Dordan to Donal Clancy and his kin... 84% of the time Tunepal guessed the tune was Johnny Cope, with 57% confidence..... When I played a rendition of Johnny Cope, by Planxty, Tunepal thought it was The Lonesome Boatman, with 52% confidence.....The only 100% confidence I have is that Tunepal has yet to get a tune correct. It gets two stars because I remain ever hopeful.....

Excellent.. But..

As a trad musician I feel that the session.org has many suspect settings.. And, I have yet to get a setting from the ceol rince na hEireann volumes. Which is a shame, since that and oneills are as close as you can get to the source..

Uncanny.

This is the first app I bought as soon as I got my iPhone. Id been using the online version of TunePal, and am super-thrilled to have it on my phone now. If youve ever found yourself with an unidentified traditional Irish tune on your hands, this handy app could save you untold aggravation. Does it work? Yes, and uncannily well. Ive tested it on a few tunes and its accuracy so far has been 100%, for both well-known and more obscure tunes. You can play at any tempo, put in variations, even make a few mistakes. I dont know whats more impressive; that this app manages to extract the melody, or that it manages to find a match, even if the database version is quite different. Not only does it work for solo instruments (I tried it on flute), but Ive also seen it work quite well in a noisy pub, with several musicians playing their own versions and variations at once. I agree with caoimghgins review: Killer. App.

Worthless

Ive tried this app many times before deciding to give it a bad review. With almost all the tunes I tried it on it was incredibly inaccurate. The tune I was searching for almost never came up on the list of options. Plus the app itself only works about half of the time. Dont waste your money on this one.

What happen to Ipad compatability?

I was running tunepal on my iiphone and pad and found it to be a good app. Implemented on an ipad, Its particularly good for finding tunes and displaying them quickly. The app works reasonably well on the iphone at sessions - particularly for tunes where a flute or whistle is dominant. I recently had to restore my ipad and was surprised to see a message that said that tunepal is no longer an ipad app. There is no way to load it on the ipad. What happened? This is a useful app but Im confused about why it suddenly became an iphone only app.

Works great for me

I bought an Ipod touch, to do a little surfing, and to try out some apps. This is the first $ for money app I bought, and I LOVE it. I have had many revelations, as I know a lot of tunes that are "Gan Ainm" around here, and its hard to get "sets" worked out and get my friends to play them, when they dont know the names, or what key I am in. I am lazy about figuring what key something is in because I play the fiddle, and all the notes are at my disposal all the time. Now Ive started making note cards with my favorite sets, with the keys on them, and I can shuffle them like a deck incase someone wants to nag me for a set list. It feels really great when my ipod not only names a tune, but can play back to me, a tune that I wasnt sure was even real for years. It really feels like a "Pal" for a second. I have the Gen 4 Ipod and only use a wi-fi here at the house in Alaska. Works fabulously.
